New Organization Aims to Fight Distracted Driving

The U.S. government is continuing with its efforts to combat the problem of distracted driving and the growing number of accidents it is associated with.
This week, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood was among the officials who unveiled a new organization, FocusDriven, which seeks to build on the momentum generated last fall at the nationwide summit on distracted driving.
“It is my hope that FocusDriven will serve as a valuable resource for those who have lost loved ones as a result of the senseless and preventable destructive practice of distracted driving,” said FocusDriven President Jennifer Smith.
Smith has been involved with efforts to stop distracted driving since losing her mother in an accident in 2008 that was caused by somebody who was talking on his cell phone.
The organization is said to be modeled after Mothers Against Drunk Driving, which is said to have changed society’s view of drunken driving to build more momentum for tougher laws. FocusDriven also says that it hopes to provide support for victims of distracted driving and to assist with public education and the evaluation of new technologies that could help ease the problem.
